| Introduction
So
you want to promote your website online through search engines.
Well, this page will help guide you through the basic aspects of search
engine submissions.
Along with this information, we have links relating to more advanced
issues regarding submissions,
page ranking, and the manner in which it all works.
What You Will Need
Firstly,
you will need a website. Without one, you can't submit to an engine.
Other than that, there are a couple of tools you can use to elevate your
site's index-ability before submission.
We will go over this in a moment. Right now, let's list off the
basics:
- Website (Requiring Domain, Hosting, and
Design)
- An Internet Connection
- Money Is Optional, Though If Your Really
Serious, It Comes In Handy
Most search
engines don't require money, though some of the larger engines like Yahoo!
will require a fee to be listed.
Past that, your site has to be online. And to submit, you have to be
online too. So that covers the basics.
So right now, let's get knee deep in <META> tags.
What is a
<META> tag? Well, these are the tags that a search engine will be
looking for when it adds you into their directory.
For instance, an engine can record keywords for searching as well as a
site description for the listing.
Granted, not all search engines record these tags, but many of them will
record at least one type of <META> tag.
Here are some examples:
- <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="blue,
white, NNY Online, internet">
- <META NAME="description" CONTENT="This
is a page dedicated to telling people about search engines">
- <META NAME="generator"
CONTENT="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
See what I
mean? These tags are inserted into the heading of the page (Before
the </HEAD> tag) and
offer the search engines a way to catalogue certain aspects. These
tags can be very useful when you go to submit.
Indeed, they can even make or break a submission on some engines.
After you
have done what you want to get ready for the submission, visit some of the
engines and look for a button or link
that will allow you to submit. Not all of these links will be the
same, or even out in the open, but they're there, don't worry.
The process itself is very simply filling out a form or e-mail and sending
it into the engine.
Once they review the entry, it'll normally go into the directory within a
specified range of time.
Where To Go
There are
literally hundreds of search engines online to choose from. Some of
the more common ones are listed here:
How It Works
Well,
different search engines work different ways. And there are multiple
types of search engines.
In any case, if your interested in how some of these engine work, here are
a couple of links to online articles:
Those are
just a sampling of some of the topics people write about everyday.
